Starting quarterback James Franklin had been starring against Georgia in the Tigers’ upset bid Between the Hedges. However, he was sent to the locker room with an injury, so coach Gary Pinkel was forced to dive into his back of tricks.
What he pulled out was six huge points. Freshman backup Maty Mauk threw what looked like a screen pass to Bud Sasser. Instead of running, however, Sasser heaved it himself, finding L’Damien Washington in the endzone. Washington fought off Shaq Johnson for the huge score, and Samford Stadium was silenced.
The Tigers would go on to miss the extra point, however, keeping it a one-possession game at 34-26.
