On Sunday, Rafael Nadal won his eighth career French Open title, and his 12th Grand Slam overall. He took down David Ferrer in straight sets (6-3, 6-2, 6-3) for the win, but the celebration was more of a player relieved than elated. Ferrer is a friendly rival and was in his first-career Grand Slam final.
Over the course of Nadal’s career, the Spaniard has absolutely dominated at Roland Garros. The win ran his record on the famed court to a mind-boggling 59-1, his only defeat coming at the hands of Robin Soderling in the fourth round in 2009.
Nadal’s 12th title moves him into a tie for third place with Roy Emerson behind Roger Federer’s 17 and Pete Sampras’ 14.
