Tampa Bay Rays pitcher Alex Cobb was carted off the field on a stretcher after he was hit in the ear by a line drive off the bat of Kansas City’s Eric Hosmer during the fifth inning of their Saturday afternoon game.
The speed of the ball as it hit Cobb was clocked at more than 102 miles per hour. It immediately sent Cobb to the ground writhing in pain and the medical staffs of both teams rushed out to provide assistance. According to the Associated Press, the sound of the ball hitting Cobb could be heard from the press box. A silver lining is that Cobb remained conscious the entire time.
He was rushed to Bayfront Medical Center in St. Petersburg for further examination.
