All-Pro defensive tackle and Patriots leader Vince Wilfork will be missing significant time after suffering what Shalise Manza Young of the Boston Globe is reporting to be a torn Achilles tendon.
The injury was sustained in the first quarter of New England’s Sunday night spotlight game against the Falcons. The 6-foot-2, 325-pound run-clogging machine over extended his right leg taking on a block.
Generally speaking, teams can plug in a massive body at defensive tackle to try to stop the run. With Wilfork, however, things won’t be so easy. The man has earned All-Pro honors in 2007, 2009, 2010, 2011 and 2012. He is widely considered to be the best in the business at what he does.
As Greg Knopping of Pats Pulpit points out, nobody will be replacing the five-time Pro Bowler:
To say this is a major blow to the Patriots defense would be a major understatement. Wilfork is the heart of this unit – a unit that has seen vast improvements to start the season. Without Wilfork clogging the middle, the Patriots become much more vulnerable up the middle.
Here’s a GIF of the play that the injury was sustained on.
As of writing, there are no reports as to exactly how long Wilfork may be out, but here’s hoping he as swift a recovery as possible.
