Wisconsin and Iowa get into Twitter beef before Heartland Trophy game

The Wisconsin Badgers and Iowa Hawkeyes are set to square off in Kinnick Stadium on Saturday in a battle for the Heartland Trophy. Having played their first game against one another all the way back in 1894, this is one of the oldest rivalry games in college football history.

Back then, however, there wasn’t any Twitter with which to make bets against the opposing side. Iowa started things off on Wednesday with one simple tweet and question:

Just to clarify the rules of the bet, Bucky answered back with a photo of the Badgers hoisting the Heartland Trophy. It’s an incredible troll job of a hated rival, if we do say so ourselves.

Not surprisingly, the folks running the Iowa Twitter account weren’t exactly impressed. They responded with a photo of their Hawkeyes hoisting the trophy, as well as some numbers for the Badgers to process.

Saturday’s game will be the first between the two sides since 2010, when Wisconsin scored a late touchdown to win, 31-30.

Although the rivalry is more than 100 years old, the Heartland Trophy was first introduced in 2004. Since then, Iowa has beaten Wisconsin four times, while the Badgers have collected three victories.

Interestingly enough, not only will the winner of Saturday’s game be hoisting the trophy and winning the social media bet, but they’ll also breaking a tie in the all-time series. The all-time record currently stands at a dead even 42-42-2.

It should be a fun one in Iowa City.
