Urban Meyer led the Florida Gators to two national titles, forging a legendary relationship with Heisman Trophy winner Tim Tebow, the school and the city of Gainesville along the way.
Now, we’re not going to come right out and say that Meyer values those relationships over the one he has with his daughter, but the man himself came pretty close to blurting out exactly that.
“Always a Gator,” Meyer told The Gainesville Sun. “[Florida basketball coach] Billy [Donovan]’s my friend. That was Camelot the year I went to Indianapolis (2006) and they won it.”
There are several interesting facets to such a succinct statement, but let’s start with Meyer’s daughter. Gigi Meyer is currently a setter on the FGCU volleyball team. Gigi had told The Sun that her father would be supporting her Eagles when the Cinderella story of the 2013 NCAA Tournament takes on the mighty Gators in the Sweet 16 on Friday.
However, Meyer was quick to refute his own daughter with his “Always a Gator” statement.
More to the point, he apparently stepped down from his post in Gainesville in order to spend more time with his family, and one assumes that means Gigi, too.
However, he went ahead and broke the collective heart of Gator Nation by taking over the head coaching job at Ohio State only a year later.
Now he has no time to watch any of Gigi’s volleyball games, because their seasons take place at the same time.
Nor, apparently, does he have time to support her school.
