NCAA Hands UConn Huskies Postseason Ban for 2013

It looks as though the NCAA is now trying to set examples. The latest from the powers that be, a postseason ban in 2013 for the UConn Huskies men’s basketball team.

According to ESPN, The NCAA’s Committee of Academic Performance approved rules in October of 2011, requiring a school to meet certain academic standards.These new standards required schools to have an Academic Progress Rate (APR) average score of 930 for a two-year span and 900 for a four-year span.

During the two year spans of ’09-’10 and ’10-’11, Jim Calhoun’s crew averaged score of 826 and 978, respectively.

Even with the latest decision UConn is still holding out hope to participate in the 2013 postseason. The rules committee is debating on whether to let schools use more recent years for their APR score average. If Uconn could use the ’11-’12 academic year, the team would make the postseason.

Calhoun and the administration will have to wait for the next decision from the NCAA with the weight of a postseason ban hanging over their head, while the rest of the NCAA teams hope that UConn is the one and only.
