After a national championship winning season in 2013, Florida State head coach Jimbo Fisher turned the keys to the defense over to Charles Kelly, naming him as the defensive coordinator before the start of the 2014 season.
It was a rocky start, as the Seminoles ranked near the bottom third in the country in total defense during Kelly’s first year in charge. Even with that, Fisher stuck with Kelly and it paid off in 2015 … as the ‘Noles had maybe the most improved defense in the country, finishing the regular season ranked 16th nationally.
When asked about the reason he stuck with FSU and turned down an offer from his alma mater (Auburn) to be their defensive coordinator, Kelly got emotional:
Kelly and the ‘Noles will have their chance to impress even more this year against a Houston Cougars offense ranked 16th nationally, including tenth in rushing offense.
