ESPN Unveils 2015 Preseason Football Power Index Rankings

To help pass the first weekend without football, ESPN decided to give college football fans something to mull over regarding the 2015 season. The Worldwide Leader unveiled its Football Power Index rankings on Friday. The ratings attempt to project the strongest teams using a handful of factors.

Following is how ESPN describes what the FPI is deigned to do.

FPI is an estimate of team strength – not a ranking of who will have the highest win total (which is dependent on schedule) and not who is most likely to make the College Football Playoff. Preseason FPI is calculated using three major components for each FBS team: prior years’ offense, defense and special teams efficiencies; returning starters and head coach information; and recruiting rankings.

Despite not aiming to predict the College Football Playoff, last year the FPI almost nailed the final four. The only team it missed on was the Ohio State Buckeyes, which nobody saw making it after losing Braxton Miller.

Following are the complete preseason college football FPI rankings.
