Remember when Gene Chizik was a National Championship-winning head coach? I’m pretty sure good ol’ Gene still owes Cam Newton a few steak dinners for that one. Newton should just have Chizik do his laundry like Dwight and Michael in The Office.

In four years as the head ball coach for the Tigers, Chizik went 33-19 and was bought out for $7.5 million after the 2012 season that produced only three wins.

Now Chizik is returning to college football in the form of the University of North Carolina’s defensive coordinator, according to ESPN.

Chizik’s defense at Auburn went downhill following the 2010 championship run. The Tigers’ defense gave up 408 and 420 yards per game in 2011 and 2012 respectively.

The Tar Heels finished this season with a 6-7 record and lost to Rutgers, 40-21, in the Quick Lane Bowl. UNC’s defense gave up 497.8 yards per game this past season.

Chizik’s presence might be felt immediately on the recruiting trail. UNC has 17 total commitments right now, and seven of them are defensive players. It will be awfully tough for an 18-year-old kid to watch Chizik knock that championship ring on his parents’ coffee table like Frank Underwood.
