Auburn quarterback Nick Marshall sent Twitter into a frenzy on Friday. Or so a lot of folks on social media thought. His courtship with the Oakland Raiders seemed to have taken a turn for a worst over social media, but it was actually all a ruse. Good thing, too, because that fan base has taken enough punishment over the last few years. Can’t say that I didn’t get a bit of smile across my face when I saw it, though.
What actually happened was the parody account @NickMarshaII (two uppercase “i’s”) taught the virtual world a lesson in how to troll. The account teed it up flawlessly. The combination of the Raiders and casual delivery of the “no thanks” at the end was the perfect kind of bait to drop into Twitter’s waters. It’s funny how very little fact checking that people do on the web these days. Did they really think a wannabe-pro was going to tweet that? Almost had me, though. Twitter trolls are funny, especially this one, but not when they mess with the Raiders!
Just got off the phone with the Raiders GM…no thanks

He Offended Everyone!
Almost instantly, fans and media members bit (heck, we even did a double take when it first slid across the timeline). Damned if I still don’t want to believe it myself. Gotta love how quickly everyone goes crazy on social media these days over every little thing that someone says. Even if it were true, could it really be called “shots fired” at Raiders nation just because he didn’t agree with the GM? Is it really an insult to everything that is even remotely associated with Oakland? I think people need to grow up. You don’t have the right to be offended about everything. Whatever, I’m going to just pretend it actually happened, because I’m pretty sure players have hung up the phone after speaking with the Raiders and thought exactly that.
Talk about a troll too good to be true.
