Monday Night Football’s game between the New England Patriots and Carolina Panthers ended in controversy. Panthers linebacker Luke Kuechly appeared to hold Pats tight end Rob Gronkowski in the end zone. A flag was thrown, presumably for pass interference, but picked up when Tom Brady’s throw was ruled uncatchable. Brady’s pass was intercepted, ending the game and giving the Panthers a 24-20 win.
Host John Brenkus and the ESPN Sport Science department took a look at the play in question.
Based upon Gronk’s skill set and the physics involved, it appears that the star pass-catcher could, indeed, have at least made a play on the ball. Whether or not he catches it is one thing, but at the very least the refs would not have decided the end of the football game.
